With everyone thinking I was angry, I was taking a wild guess that it would be at least thirty minutes before anyone realized I was gone. That was a good head start. From the vague vibe I was feeling from Jess and the other traitors, I was looking at covering a distance of about four miles. I ran that nearly every morning, and the time it took to get there would allow my wolf and me time to figure out what we were going to do when we got there.

Cutting the bitch was what my wolf wanted to do, and I couldn’t honestly say that I wasn’t on board with that plan, but I was smart enough to know that I couldn’t take on eight werewolves on my own. I would have to find their hideout and come back with my pack. Bringing Phoenix and his clan to watch my back in case any of my wolves were really on Jessica’s side was a smart thing to do, so I would let them come, too, not that I would really get a choice in the matter; I doubted he would stay behind even if I begged him to.

A loud clatter had my head whipping around to look behind me again. An aluminum trash can lay on its side, its contents spilling into the street. A tabby cat peeked around the edge of the torn trash bag and I exhaled in relief. I was a sad case, indeed. I laughed at myself. I was not used to being the monster.

“I aim to change that, Mena.”

I rolled my eyes at my wolf. “You just be you and let me be me and we’ll get along just fine.”

Soft laughter filled my head and I had to smile. I had to admit that I liked her, regardless of how much trouble she was causing me with Phoenix. At least we had come to a compromise. I didn’t know how well said compromise was going to work out, or even if it would at all, but I was willing to try. Everyone deserved a shot at happiness, even with as insane as our case may be.

As I turned my head back around to continue on my journey, I ran smack-dab into the hard chest of a man. He was in shadow, so I couldn’t see his face. Stumbling back, I attempted to get my balance, but his arms closed tightly around my body, jerking me to him and trapping my arms down at my sides so I couldn’t move.

Struggling against his solid hold on me, I opened my mouth to let out a scream, but he twisted me around and clamped a hand over my mouth so fast that I didn’t know what was happening until I was being pulled backward, away from the security of the streetlights that lined the suburban road.

I raised my knee up then brought my foot down hard on the toe of his shoe. He let out a muffled grunt, but continued to drag me into the shadows.

This had to be one of the werewolves. The strength alone told me that. They had to have been watching my house, just waiting for me to leave. This bastard was going to kill me if I didn’t do something.

My wolf stirred under my skin. She wanted out and it was the first time since I’d been bitten that I agreed with that plan. With only a little more than human strength and quick reflexes, it wasn’t possible for me to handle a grown male werewolf on my own.

My final option, before letting my wolf free, was try to at least injure him. I hoped that would be enough to make him loosen his grip on me enough so I could run. If he gave chase, I would have to concede and let my wolf take over.

Gripping the dagger tighter in my palm, I rotated my wrist and drove the blade into his side as hard as I could. An ear-piercing ululation erupted from his throat and he let go of me. I didn’t wait or look back. I ran as fast as my legs would carry me, adrenaline and my wolf giving me the speed and strength to push my muscles past what a human would be able to endure.

“Mena… Mena!” I heard the cry behind me, but my mind wasn’t registering anything except panic and the need to get as far away from my attacker as possible. “Mena—wait! It’s me…” A strangled groan had me slowing. “…it’s… it’s Phoenix. I—I’m so sorry, Mena.”

I froze, not wanting to look back at the man, terrified that what he’d spoken was true. If it was—if I turned and saw those ice-blue eyes staring back at me, it would destroy any trust I had ever had in him.

“Please, Mena, I never meant to hurt you. I was only trying to scare you so you would realize what a stupid stunt going off on your own to find the killers was. What were you thinking?”

The blood rushed through my veins at an impossible speed, and fury washed over me in waves as I stood there trying to decide whether to walk away or allow my wolf to rip Phoenix’s head off. She was all for the second option.

I heard him cough, and then groan in agony. I imagined he was pulling the dagger out of whatever organ I had been lucky enough to hit. There was a lot of heavy, ragged breathing and two more guttural-sounding coughs. It appeared as though I had hit a lung. Too bad it wasn’t his heart! I wasn’t sure stabbing him in the heart with a silver blade would kill him, but I would have put money on a bet that it would have been a hell of a lot more painful.

I turned my head to glare at him, but the hatred I had expected to feel wasn’t there. He had fallen to his knees, and his head was bent, his eyes focused on the bright red stain spreading across his new shirt.

Shaking my head, I looked up to the sky and asked, “Why me?” After receiving no answer, I sighed and began the one-hundred-meter walk back to Phoenix.

Chapter 1
Lost in thought, Abe ran a loving hand over Ariana’s swelling belly, then grinned
when she stirred from sleep and blinked lazily up at him. Wrapping his mind
around that – not only had she been his wife for over three months, but was
also carrying his child – was too much of a dream come true, one he never wanted
to wake up from.
“Good afternoon, Mrs. Cambridge. It’s fifteen after one.”
Nuzzling closer to him, Ariana yawned and let her eyes drift shut. “Five more
minutes.”
He snickered against her hair and then kissed her forehead. “Take all the
time you need, baby, but I have a feeling Becky and Janie will—”
Quick and persistent tapping on the chamber door cut off his words and had him
rolling his eyes in irritation.
“—knock on the door soon,” he finished through a clenched jaw, his mood swiftly
turning sour at the lack of private time the island’s residents allowed him to
have with his wife. “I can kill them, you know. Nobody will find their
bodies. I swear it. Did I ever tell you that I’m a shark whisperer?”
Ariana giggled as she pushed against his body, and when he tried to grab her, she
threw a pillow in his face and scrambled out of bed.
He fell back to his own pillow, defeated. “We are going on vacation. No cell
phones. No knocks on the door—unless it’s room service—and, best of all, no
distractions.”
Laughing as she opened the door, Ariana greeted her friends with a hug and took the
coffee Janie held out with a sigh and a gracious smile. “I love both of
you so much.”
Abe huffed as he glared at them. “You just saw them yesterday. And you don’t
need that caffeine; it’s bad for the baby.”
Ariana took a long sip and winced as the heat bit her tongue. “The only thing
that’s bad for the baby is my blood pressure going up when his or her father
fusses over me too much.”
Abe blanched, and started to throw back the comforter to go to her, but thought
better of it once he caught sight of Becky and Janie looking at him. Unlike
Ariana, he hadn’t dressed after making love the night before.
He exhaled in relief as he studied the growing smirk on his wife’s face. She was
the only one who could, quite literally, drop him to his knees with only a few
words. He kept waiting for the spell she had him under to wear off, but with
each day that passed, he had only grown more mesmerized by her charm.
Abe raised an eyebrow. “Come here, devil woman.”
“Abe,” Becky said, laughing. “There’s no time—er… take all the time you need,
Your Highness,” she said quickly, when his mouth flattened into a thin
line and his teal eyes locked on her, daring her to say one… more… word.
He would burn that damn clinic to the ground before he would allow anyone to take
even one more minute with her away from him. She already worked too many hours
as it was. It had started out being only five, but then had swiftly moved up to
six, then seven. He had drawn a line at eight, but, more times than not, Ariana
stayed at the clinic up to ten hours, even against his wishes and constant
phone calls.
He tore his piercing eyes away from Becky and they softened as he met Ariana’s
smile.
She set the cup down and crawled up on the mattress and into his awaiting arms. She
stared into his eyes as her fingers brushed back the hair hanging over his
ears, reminding him it was time for a trim. That would take all of fifteen
minutes, so what would he do with the other four-hundred-sixty-five minutes she
would be out of his sight?
He had some ass-chewing to do, that’s what, and he was going to do that first.
“I’ll be back before you know it, Abe,” she said sweetly, almost convincingly,
but he knew better; she’d been telling him that every day since she’d started
working, and it had never, ever been true.
Even though he knew arguing would get him absolutely nowhere, he still pleaded his
case. “Stay here,” he whispered. “Take the day off. I could use
a little healing myself.” He grinned devilishly.
The only answer he got was a small smile and a long kiss. Abe wrapped his arms
around her and pulled her across his body, rolling with her until she was lying
on her back and he was looking down at her beautiful face.
He knew she wouldn’t concede to his wishes today, but that wouldn’t stop him from
trying. He had faith that one day she would.
“Sunset, Ariana. Please. I have something I want to show you.”
She laughed. “I just bet you do.”
He tucked a strand of blond hair behind her ear and softly kissed her lips.
Lingering a breath away, he spoke so only she could hear. “It’s sort of
important and special. It’s been in the works for several years, but it’s almost
complete now. I didn’t want to mention it until Roger said you could see it. He
sent me a text last night, but you were too exhausted after work, so I didn’t
say anything. I don’t think I can keep from telling you what it is until your
next day off, so please don’t overwork yourself today, and try to get out of
there by eight.” He paused for a moment. “And eat light for supper;
I’m taking you out afterward.”
Ariana’s eyes narrowed to thin slits, but there was amusement in them that she couldn’t
hide behind her fake anger. “You know how much I hate surprises.”
Abe knew she could have searched his thoughts in one instant, so he quickly rifled
through his memory for the lyrics of Mary Had A Little Lamb, just in case.
Mindreading was one witchy trait that
could be both a blessing and a curse, but thankfully Ariana tried not to use it
too often. For that, he was grateful. It was bad enough that he couldn’t keep
his hands off his wife for more than five minutes. Keeping his thoughts off her
would be downright impossible.
He kissed her quick and moved away, so she could get up and ready for work. The quicker
she left, the quicker he could let out his aggression on someone who couldn’t
paralyze his vocal chords. “You’ll like this one. I promise it won’t
embarrass you.”
“Can we come?” Janie asked, the petite girl nearly jumping up and down at
hearing about something new and exciting on the island.
Abe chuckled. “Yeah, you can come. Bring someone, if you like,” he said,
knowing that Janie had been spending quite a bit of time lately with Ryan from
maintenance, and would more than likely want to bring him along. It was killing
Lance to see her with the guy, but since he had been the one who let her go,
there wasn’t a whole hell of a lot he could do about it but mope.
“Who else is going?” Becky asked with a sneer.
Abe shrugged nonchalantly, but he knew she was inquiring whether Will, his brother,
was going to be there, and possibly be with Katrista, the girl who had flown to
the island on the back of a minion from Hell under the orders of Apollyon, the
demon who damn near took Ariana away from him in more than one way.
Just thinking about that night made him want to wrap Ariana in the tight cocoon of
his arms and never let her out of his sight, but that had been almost three
months ago, and they hadn’t seen or heard from the guy since his descent back
into Hell. Gloria, their personal guardian angel, was checking in on a regular
basis, but she hadn’t sensed any evil hanging around the island, either. It was
still a struggle to relax, but Abe knew how Ariana hated to be smothered, so he
forced his worry from his features, for her.
“I’m not sure, Becky, but if you think I’m going to tell my brother he can’t go just
because you’ll be there, then you don’t know me very well.” He ignored the
hurt look in her eyes and slapped Ariana’s butt when she crawled over him to
get out of bed. He chuckled when she yelped.
After hearing the shower come on, he looked back to the two girls standing in the
middle of his bedroom. “Would the two of you mind leaving? I’m about to go
shower with my wife, and Ariana threw my boxers across the room last night.”
He smiled as the two girls immediately avoided eye contact, their faces turning a
bright shade of pink in embarrassment at being in the same room with their
naked king.
“Go on. Ariana will call you when she’s ready to leave. I can’t promise you’ll be
on time for work, so you may want to leave without her.” He stopped and
huffed when they only stood there with sullen expressions. “What? She
isn’t yours; she’s mine. Go!”
Tripping over their feet, both girls turned and ran for the door.
With a smile on his face, Abe threw back the cover and jogged to the bathroom. He
could only see the top of Ariana’s wet head, leaned back into the steamy shower
spray, eyes closed as she basked in the warmth of the water. He tiptoed around
the tiled wall that separated the shower from the rest of the bathroom, and had
her in his arms before she even opened her eyes.
Ariana smiled as he touched his lips to hers, and Abe noticed that he couldn’t fit his
body flush to hers any longer, not with his young growing so rapidly within her
womb.
He ran one hand over the soft skin of her belly and pulled her mouth to his with
his other by the nape of her neck. A low moan escaped her mouth and he drank in
the ecstasy like a wino who had just found a forgotten bottle of
eighty-year-old wine in the cellar.
She gasped for air when he released her mouth to devour her neck and that little
spot below her ear she loved for him to kiss.
“Abe,” she panted. “I’m going to be late for work.”
An approving growl rumbled from his chest as her hands slid down to his hips.
“Damn right, you are. I told Becky and Janie to go on without you, that
you would be there when you damn well got there.”
She laughed against his mouth when he claimed ownership once again. “You are
such a king.”
Lowering his head to explore more of what she had to offer him, he looked from one
tempting mound to the other, and finally decided to take the left rosy nub
between his lips and softly massage the other with his hand. Decisions,
decisions. It was a tough job being a man in love. He often thought he needed
at least one extra mouth. Wondering vaguely whether Ariana might be able to
witch it on his body, somewhere, he focused on the task in hand.
Ariana’s lips parted, and he smiled when a rush of pleasurable sounds echoed off the
walls of the bathroom.
With his other hand free, he ran his long fingers over the cheek of her ass, down
the back of her thigh and pulled her right knee up to his hip. He wasn’t
worried about her getting off balance and falling. He had her. He had all of
her.
His head jerked up and he crushed his mouth on hers just as he slid through the
soft folds of her sex and into his most favorite place to be.
His jaw clamped shut and his hand shot out to brace them against the shower wall
when her muscles tightened around his erection.
“Yeeees!” The cry escaped her throat and her nails clawed the skin on his back, but he
pumped into her, keeping a steady rhythm and watching her expression as the
orgasm threatened to rip through her body. “Abe…” she said, winded,
and grabbed his biceps, squeezing the thick muscles and making him grin,
“I—I need…”
“I know, baby. Just let it go.” He jerked his hand from the wall, pulling her
other leg up, and just like a pro, she hooked her ankles at the small of his back
and took all of him. His knees damn near buckled.
Aiming to get his own release by the time Ariana’s climax was over, Abe growled and
quickened his strides. Her body quaked all around him. He was almost there. He
was there.
“Take my vein,” Ariana whispered.
Pulling a bit back from the rush, he blinked the water out of his eyes and looked down
at her in confusion. Sure enough, her head was tilted to the side and her wet
hair was moved away, baring her neck and that throbbing vein to him. He jerked
his head away, trying to ignore the instant bloodlust and the anger that was
quickly boiling up inside him.
“No,” he said shortly.
“Abe, please. You need it. I want you to.”
He stopped moving inside her and set her feet on the wet tile. Grabbing a towel
from the hook on the wall, he threw it around his waist, tying it extra tight,
so just maybe it would cut off the circulation in his erection and deflate the
damn thing.
“Abe! Where are you going?”
“Not
now, Ariana.” He threw open the bathroom door and walked into the bedroom,
and wasn’t a bit surprised to hear she had followed.
“What did I do? I don’t understand why you’re acting this way. Talk to me, damn
you!” she shouted when he only stood at his closet and shoved hanger after
hanger to the right. Hell, he wasn’t even sure what he was looking for.
He stopped and let his arm fall, but didn’t turn around. “You know how I feel
about using you as a meeker while you’re pregnant. We’ve had this discussion
before, Ariana. Hell, we’ve even fought about it a few times, but you don’t
seem to understand or maybe you just don’t care; I don’t know—”
“You think that I don’t care about my child?” she said, and Abe turned around,
the muscles in his jaw doing the same workout they did every time their
conversation led to him feeding from her. “How can you even say
that?” she snapped. “If I felt, in any way, that you taking the
amount of blood from me that you need would hurt the baby, I wouldn’t ask you
to do it.” She pointed to her chest, and fury burned throughout Abe’s bones.
“I know it won’t hurt the baby—”
“But I don’t!” he roared, causing her to flinch. He shook his head and reached
into the closet, grabbing a random shirt and a pair of jeans. When he looked
back at her, he was a little calmer, but not much. “I don’t know what is
good or what is bad for the baby, Ariana, but I can’t imagine taking anything
from you that the baby needs could ever be a good thing. I won’t do it.”
He ripped the towel away, and to his delight, either the terrycloth or his pissy
mood had done the job, because Mr. Happy wasn’t so happy anymore. Without
wasting time going to the dresser for boxers, he just shoved one leg at a time
in the jeans then buttoned and zipped the fly. After throwing the shirt over
his head and pushing his arms through the armholes, Abe finally made his way to
the dresser to grab socks.
“Abe,” Ariana whispered, but he didn’t look at her. He couldn’t look at her when he
was this mad, especially when it was her that he was mad at. “Abe, look at
me. I have to go to work, and I don’t want to leave you upset.” He still
didn’t say anything.
Abe put his socks on and located his boots by the bar. Tying the sons of bitches
wasn’t going to happen with his hands shaking so badly, so he just shoved his
feet in, grabbed his keys from the bar and headed for the door.
“Abe! Where are you going? The sun is out!”
“Go to work, Ariana. I’ll see you later.”
He jerked open the door, then slammed it shut behind him.

Excerpt:

He shoved another armload full of socks and t-shirts on top of jeans in a duffel bag, then turned to walk to the bathroom to retrieve personal hygiene items. He barely glanced up to acknowledge Isaiah, arms crossed over his chest in a comfortable stance, leaning on the doorjamb.
“Going somewhere?” Isaiah asked coolly.
“As far away from here as I can get,” he responded from the darkened bathroom.
“You do know there is a meeting about to begin downstairs, right?”
Thoros nodded once as he re-entered the bedchamber, not bothering to look at the archangel. He tossed the items in the duffle with the rest of the things he would need for his extended journey. “I am aware of the meeting. I am also aware that she does not want or need me there.” He looked left then right, and then paused only another brief moment before zipping the bag closed and tossing it over his right shoulder.
Thoros meant to walk through the doorway, but Isaiah stood upright and blocked the only exit with his body. Well, there was always the window. He thought about turning and diving through the glass and wondered briefly if he would clear the cement and land in the water of the underground swimming pool. The cement would hurt like a bitch. Hell, who was he kidding? The damn glass would hurt! He knew fleeting wasn’t an option. The angel would have already put a halt on that shit.
Letting the pack fall to the floor, Thoros rolled his eyes toward the ceiling and huffed. “Out of my way, old man. She made it clear she doesn’t want me. If you didn’t hear her, I can give you a recap: it was a whole lot of ‘get lost’.”
“Old man? I’ll have you know I look younger than you. Especially as of late. You should exfoliate more, and moisturize.”
“You knew what I meant.”
“That I am thousands of years old? Yes,” Isaiah nodded as his lips pursed together. “I am that. That also means I probably have a lot of wisdom, and listening to me would more than likely be in your best interest.”
“Listening to you has done nothing but piss me off, angel.”
“You have to go with her. You have to know that it is difficult for her to trust you when she has thought all along that you’ve betrayed her.”
Thoros’ jaw locked down tight and he spoke through his teeth as anger burst from the depths of his half-soul. “Yeah, and whose fault was that? You could have told her at any time in the three months we’ve spent apart that I was the one who saved her. That I am the one she is destined to be with. But no, instead, you were a coward who let her dream day and night about going in search of the lost angel, a male fate never intended her to be with!”
Isaiah moved out of the way to let him pass and Thoros jumped at the chance, grabbing his duffle and rushing through the doorway. “I see. You are just going to take the easy way out? Never look back? Never see her again?”
“Oh, I’ll see her again,” he said, but didn’t bother slowing down or looking at the archangel. “I’ll see her every time I close my eyes.”
“She deserves for you to give her time, Thoros. If you truly love her, then you must know that walking away is not the answer to your problems.”
Thoros froze as his boot landed on the third step from the bottom of the grand staircase. Love. He allowed himself a moment to think about that word. His skin flushed hot and his foot slipped to the next step, causing him to lose his balance and having to reach out for the banister to steady himself. He believed she was his soulmate and that he wanted to be with her—but love? No. Love? Never. He had never been in love before. Was this what this horrible feeling was? And what happened if the one you allowed yourself to fall in love with didn’t love you back? What the hell happens then? Right. Broken heart. That’s what the horrible feeling was. Fan-fucking-tastic! He had never expected to experience it before, but he never imagined it would actually hurt. He rubbed at the center of his chest and fought the hot sting of tears that filled his eyes. He looked around him, all of a sudden dizzy. Wiping at the sheen of sweat that had broken on his brow, Thoros swallowed hard and concentrated on calming the erratic beating of his heart.
“Do not give up on her. Your time will come, son.”
He turned around and looked to the top of the stairs at Isaiah, blinking the angel into focus. “And what if it never does?” he whispered around the lump in his throat.
“You will know you tried and will never have any regrets where she is concerned.”
“I already have regrets where Josselyn is concerned. I regret ever having met her.”
Thoros turned and stumbled down the remaining steps, and then crossed the foyer and opened the front door.
“It’s for the best.”

Isaiah didn’t respond to his thought, so he took a step over the threshold and closed the door gently behind him.

Meet Author Lindsay Avalon!

While you all settle in for a fun interview – you can peek at Lindsay’s Bio:

I am a wife, a mother to an adorable mini schnauzer, a programmer, and now an author. I love reading romance because no matter what may be happening in my life, I can always count on my books to end happily ever after. My sister drilled into me an appreciation for fantasy and mythology, something I try to bring to my books. After hearing me complain a few too many times that I had “nothing” to read despite the hundreds of paperbacks scattered around the house, my husband began suggesting I write my own stories. When I finally took his advice I discovered that although I enjoy my day job as a software engineer, my true calling is to be an author.

Thanks for taking a few minutes out of your crazy October to stop by today, Lindsay! Having been blessed to read a few snippets of your work (fantastic, too!), I have to ask…what inspired you to become a writer?

I’ve always loved reading and used to write poetry. After complaining to my husband a few too many times that I had nothing to read in a room filled with paperbacks (and you don’t even want to know how many Kindle books I own…), he asked me why I didn’t write my own book. This followed pestering by my older sister to participate in NaNoWriMo with her so finally I caved into peer pressure. I day dream and come up with scenes in my head so I tried to translate that to paper and discovered just how much I
loved it.

I’m curious to know how many Kindle books you have! 🙂 Can you tell us more about your latest book?

I’m working on two projects right now actually. The first is a novella that will be published in an anthology due out on Halloween. Song of the Abyss is a twisted fairy tale loosely based on the Little Mermaid. Here’s the blurb from it:

Princess Nerissa had envisioned a perfect wedding to a handsome prince. Instead, she fell into a nightmare. When her new husband tries to murder her just hours after pledging his life to her, she must flee towards the sea. Caught in transition from woman to selkie, she is trapped by the dark waters she hoped would be her salvation. Now her destiny becomes that of luring young men to their death…until one comes along that reignites the spark of love inside her. However to ensure her future, she must first face her past. Revenge must be taken…for both her life, and the life of the young man she now loves.

My full-length novel due out in December is called Breaking the Nexus. It’s a paranormal romance filled with mythology, magic, and even a murder mystery.

You know all those myths and legends you heard growing up? The ones that everyone always said were just made up stories? Well they were wrong; those tales were based on reality. The world you know is simply one realm, the Human Realm, and a magical barrier called the Nexus shields this realm from the truth. A second realm, the Mythrian Realm, exists, inhabited by all those creatures you thought were just fiction. The Nexus is breaking and the realms are colliding.

‘Breaking The Nexus’ sounds so interesting – can’t wait for the release! What has been the most difficult scene for you to write for your current project?

There are two scenes that gave me trouble. Initially I had no idea how to write a sex scene, but I managed to get over that one luckily lol. The other difficult scene has really been the ending. I’m the kind of person who won’t finish a really good video game because I don’t want to say goodbye to it. It sounds silly, but as much as I wanted to finish my book, it was really hard to write the ending.

Ending are tough. Even if you know how it should end. 🙂 So, do you follow a certain writing process with your work?

Not really. I tend to have a general idea of where I want a certain scene to go, but for the most part I just sit in front of the computer and type.

Do you read the same genre that you write/can you give us some examples of your favorite books?

I do! I read a bunch of different sub-genres of romance including paranormal, suspense, futuristic, historical, erotica…pretty much anything but “sweet.” Some of my favorite books have been the in Death series by J.D. Robb, Acheron by Sherrilyn Kenyon, Kiss of Snow by Nalini Singh, Branded by Fire also by Nalini Singh, and then a whole bunch of other books that would take me forever to list out haha.

Excellent choices! If you could choose any Author, living or dead, to shadow for a year, who would you choose and why?

I think I’d shadow Nalini Singh. She has two series, the Archangel and the Psy-Changeling series, that are pretty distinct worlds and yet both are rich and engaging. I completely loose myself in her worlds. She is also one of the most consistent authors I’ve read given how many books she has published now. Often I find certain books just aren’t as strong as others, but I have yet to read one of her books that I’ve felt lacked in any way.

So Lindsay, what has been the most rewarding part of your writing journey so far?

Meeting so many wonderful people who have supported and encouraged me along the way. I dove headfirst into the writing community as a way to ensure I wouldn’t abandon Breaking the Nexus before I finished it, but I never imagined I’d meet all of the people I have. Also just the sheer escape I’ve found in writing. If I’m having a rough day, I know I can lose myself in my book and push aside all the worries I had. Even if I never sell more than a handful of copies, I’ll cherish both the friends I have found and the joy writing brings me.

Aww, wonderful answer! If you could give any advice for budding authors looking to self-publish, what would it be?

Throw yourself to the social wolves so to speak. Don’t be afraid to go out there and be yourself, meet new people, and above all else have fun. More than anything, be prepared to take critiques because no matter how amazing you may think your writing is, it can always be improved. There are those who will help you learn, but you have to be willing to listen!

“Social Wolves” – love it! If you could spend a month secluded in the woods, what books would you bring with you to read?

Oh wow this is a tough one. I think I would bring my indie author friends’ books because I’ve loved the ones I’ve gotten to but I’m still so behind. I’d also bring all of my in Death books, Nalini Singh, Kresley Cole, and Gena Showalter books because I’ve reread all of those more times than I can count!

My Indie Author list is longer than my arm, too! What can we expect to see from you in the future and where can we find your work?

I plan on several more books in the Nexus series as well as some unrelated projects I have swirling in my head. Right now, I don’t have any books available for purchase but you can find more about my projects by visiting my blog.

Author Interview & Book Launch with Miranda Stork!

“I was born in Guisborough, North Yorkshire in 1987 and have lived in various places around Britain, including Newcastle and Glasgow. My writing is inspired by various writers, including the vivid characters of Charles Dickens, the imagination of Stephen King, and the gothic imagery of Anne Rice.”

Oh, are you all in for a treat today! My good friend, who just happens to be a writer too, is launching a new book today and took some time out of her crazy Book Release Internet Tour to stop by and do an interview for us! 🙂 So…grab an extra pillow and get comfortable…Miranda is ours (well, for at least a few minutes)!

Miranda! Thank you so much for joining us today, and congrats on the new book! Can you tell us more about it?

‘Erin’ is my newest novel, and is the sequel to ‘Conner’. It continues the story on from Conner, following Erin as we now see her in her new life. I don’t want to give too much away for people who haven’t read ‘Conner’, but let’s just say that the revelation at the end of ‘Conner’ leads into a war in ‘Erin’. There will be more horror, more sex, and 67% more snark.

I. Cannot. Wait. Super happy for you! Inquiring minds want to know…could you share your writing process with us?

NO! Nah, I’m kidding. I’m not sure I actually have a good writing process, but it works for me. I tend to have an idea, and make a few notes on it. I never really plan everything, per se, but I do know where the major conflicts and plot points should pop up. I’m definitely a ‘pantster’ writer, I like to see where the story will take me. Sometimes I write something, read it back a few days later, and can’t even understand how I wrote it. Which means it’s either working, or I have another personality. Take your pick. 😀

Hmm. A ‘panster’ writer. I fit into this category as well. lol Where does the inspiration for your writing come from?

All kinds of things. Mainly people though, and one of my favourite things to do is people-watch. And yes, it freaks people out. But it is for art! So a necessary evil. A lot of my inspiration also comes from places; most of my novels so far are set in places I’ve actually been, and the memory of that place sometimes suggests a story to me. I’ve always had an interest in the paranormal as well, so I guess it fascinates me enough that strange stories pop up in my head!

There’s no shame in people-watching…as long as you don’t invest in binoculars. (No judgment if you do) So, if you could be one of your characters for a day, who would you choose and why?

Oooh, tough question…but I think it would have to be Erin herself. She is (at least physically, and with snark) based a little on me, but there the similarities end. She is like a super-duper version of me, and it would be awesome to spend a day as her. Especially in ‘Erin’. She is EPIC.

And if Erin became a movie, what would the opening song be?

I love this question! I have actually thought about this a couple of times, so I’m glad someone asked. It would be a toss-up between Disturbed’s ‘The Animal’, or possibly ‘Bring Me To Life’ by Evanescence.

I pick Evanescene! Now we all know writing is a 24/7 job but how do you pass the time when you aren’t writing?

We can have spare time in between writing??? I’m only kidding, I like to do a few things; cooking is a big passion of mine, as is painting. I do both digital realism and abstract oils, and it can be a nice break from writing while still being creative. I also enjoy a lot of sports, including swimming, karate, and tennis- although I’m not very good at tennis! 😀

*Note to self – don’t mess with Miranda or she will Karate-chop me*

Do you have any advice for budding writers?

Keep writing! That is the most important thing. Lots of people think we sit around waiting for the ‘muse’ to show up, but it really isn’t like that at all. Or if it is, someone needs to let me know, because I missed that memo. Always make time in your day, every day, to write. Even if you write total rubbish, and only had half an hour to do it in, it will become routine as your writing improves. Treating it as a job, rather than a hobby, is what sorts the writers from the would-be writers. And read! Stephen King’s saying is true, ‘If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have time to write.’

Nah, you didn’t miss the memo. Or…maybe we both did. lol So, what can we expect to see from you in the future?

Ooh, lots of things! I’m currently working on my new series, ‘Scarlet Rain’, in which it will kick off with a ‘shadow-demon’, and add lots of other creatures as well! I’m also trying to find time to fit in a few comedic pieces, and of course I’m writing up my ‘Bassinville Witches’ series for the next ten months.

Yes! Hopefully we will see something with ‘cats’ in the future! 😉 If you could shadow your favorite Author for a year (living or dead) who would you choose and why?

Definitely, definitely, Charles Dickens. He is my favourite author of all time, and I imagine it would be amazing to spend even a day learning about his writing and his inspiration, never mind a year!

Excellent choice! That would be one very awesome year. Miranda, where can we find your work?

You can find my print books on Amazon and all good bookstores, and you can find my ebooks on amazon and Smashwords.

And now it’s time for our Rapid-Fire Questions!!

Chocolate or Wine?

Ooh….erm….erm…chocolate?

Beach or Pool?

Definitely beach.

Cats or Dogs?

Toughie, as I’ve had both…but right now I only have my little cat, so cats.

eReader or Paperback?

While I love e-books for lots of reasons, nothing will ever beat the smell and feel of a paperback.

Folding Laundry or Cleaning the Cat-box?

Ugh! Folding laundry please!

Delivery or Take-Out

Take-out. I’m not lazy to walk there, just too lazy to not cook it.

Heels or Flats?

Heels! Every time!

Jeans or Dresses?

Hmmm…..it would have to be my jeans, as I love them, but still glammed up with my heels.

Awesome interview, Miranda!! I do hope you enjoy your interview rounds today, and wish you the best with your new book release!! You can find Miranda on her Website, and on her Author page with Amazon . Keep reading for more info about Erin…the anticipated sequel to Conner.
