I can’t remember how long their bodies burned, but I do remember the sun setting before it was over, not far off in the distance, just beyond the still and dismal outline of downtown San Diego. Its flame-colored glare hit the Pacific Ocean and slowly melted beyond the horizon as smoke drifted up in dark gray coils into the sky. The fleeing sun took the heat away with it, and as the first stars of the night made their appearance, the crisp chill of January returned.

Ash settled all around me, resting on my eyelashes and the tip of my nose, threatening to choke the oxygen from my lungs. I kept vigil over my dead family while sitting at the edge of the garden, slumped forward with my legs crossed and my hands resting loosely in my lap. A steady breeze from the approaching night collided with the draft from the fire, sending hot gusts of air in my direction. My face and arms stung from the warmth, but the smell was worse than the heat. The strong odor of burning flesh kept my nostrils flared and stomach turning.

I knew that day it was true what they say; one can never forget the smell of a dead body. I know, I’ll never forget.

Meet Zoey, the Dog

So, Zoey’s not your ordinary post-apocalyptic dog. She doesn’t chase down zombies or tear off the arms of gun-toting bad guys, but she’ll always be Riley’s #1 companion. The love dogs have for their people is unconditional, right?

Zoey kept her tail tucked between her legs and her head low, as if something would attack us at any moment. The longer she continued like that, the more I felt we weren’t alone; I couldn’t shake the feeling that we were being watched.

Find out all about Zoey and her person in ‘I Hope You Find Me’, the first book in the Find Me series, free for your Kindle, Nook and Apple devices. Happy Reading!

Tuesday Teaser – WHIL is Coming Soon!

It’s right around the corner – the release of the 4th Find Me book, ‘Where Hope is Lost’. You’ll need to wear your big kid panties for this book, y’all. Things are messy in Riley’s world.

“Stay down,” Jin warned.

Two more shots. That was five total. From all fours, I searched the shadows for answers. They played with my eyes, twisting and morphing into shapes that weren’t real. We couldn’t crawl back to the cabin, but I couldn’t stand either. A shift was happening in my brain; reality and fantasy became dance partners, mingling and moving in tandem. Every shadow of the forest turned into someone I knew. Matt leered at me from behind a tree, with Bobby and Alan shimmering into shape beside him. My head spun. Skip stepped out from behind the skeletal remains of a bush, a smile on his broad face. Fin was there too, talking from across the woods. He waved for me to come to him, to follow him down the trail. At his back, two children, my children, darted from one tree to another, laughing. Fin kept talking, his mouth moving with urgency, but I couldn’t hear him. I couldn’t hear anything.

“What’s he saying,” I asked. “I can’t hear…” Someone tugged on my arm as Fin turned away from us, fading into the trail like mist. “Wait,” I called. “Wait for me!”

Both my arms were lifted and my heels brushed against the ground as I was dragged away. I felt it coming, another break that would take me out of this world and into another, but then the scenery changed and I was set down hard on my ass. My cheek exploded from pain. Jin had slapped me hard across the face. While a tear ran out of my left eye from the sting, I stared up at him, shocked.

“Are you here?” he demanded, his voice thick with concern. “Are you here with me?”

I nodded, trembling in every joint, unsure of what was real and what wasn’t. “I’m here,” I said. “I’m here.”

He bent forward and yanked me upright. With his face an inch from mine, he hissed, “Then run!”

If you’ve gotten this far with Riley and her crew, you know the stakes for survival in the new world are high, love can be found and then lost, and the dead are still hanging around. She’s always been one to hold onto hope, but in her latest journey, Riley realizes that hope can’t save them all…

“Who?” I screamed in his face. “Who was it?”

He tried to answer, but choked instead. I screamed louder, as if that would force the words out of his closed windpipe. Jin had to peel me off the kid, and I didn’t go quietly. I clawed. Kicked. Screamed. Demanding to know who had died on their way out of the compound. Was it Connor? Was it Jacks? Was it Drake? But the boy wouldn’t answer me – he couldn’t – he was on all fours, gasping for air as Jin half-carried and half-shoved me as far away as he could manage. He didn’t release me until my flailing arms hit home, and I struck his jaw with a right hook. After I tripped over a small end table and landed on my ass, Jin fell into the wall that separated the living space from the bathroom.

The roaring in my ears sounded eerily like the popping of the fireplace, and I looked over my shoulder at the spurting fire, the metallic taste of blood filling my mouth from biting my tongue. It blended with the sweet aftertaste of Jin’s tea, but I refused to swallow. I spit into the fire, and watched the heat sizzle and smoke over the small wet spot until it was gone, leaving no trace of my blood behind.

One of us was dead, and the kid couldn’t tell me who. The rest were out in these mountains somewhere, looking for me, or frozen already from the cold. There was nothing I could do but sit in the treehouse and wait for the snow to melt. I was going to go crazy weeks before that happened.
